Be Aware of Ovarian Cancer

Women: Know Your Body - Be Aware of Ovarian Cancer

May 8th is Ovarian Cancer Day, and this year's theme is "Ovarian Cancer: Know the Signs, Save Your Life." This is a powerful message because early detection is crucial for successful treatment.

What is Ovarian Cancer?

It's a disease that starts in the ovaries, which are part of a woman's reproductive system. While it can be serious, early detection makes a huge difference.

Listen to Your Body: Signs to Watch For

The tricky part is that ovarian cancer symptoms can sometimes be vague and mimic other conditions. Here are some key things to be aware of:

  • Persistent bloating: Feeling constantly puffed up, not just after a big meal.
  • Pelvic or abdominal pain: A general ache or discomfort in your lower belly area.
  • Feeling full quickly or difficulty eating: You may feel like you can't quite finish a meal, even though you're hungry.
  • Changes in vaginal bleeding or discharge: Unusual bleeding patterns or discharge that's different from what you normally experience.
  • Trouble with your bathroom routine: Difficulty emptying your bladder or bowels.
  • Unexplained weight loss or gain: Fluctuations in weight that can't be explained by diet or exercise.
  • Fatigue: Feeling constantly tired, even when you've gotten enough sleep.

Remember: These symptoms can be caused by other things too. But if you experience any of them persistently, it's important to see your doctor to get checked out.

Who's Most at Risk?

  • Women over 50
  • Women with a family history of ovarian cancer
  • Women who haven't been pregnant or haven't used birth control pills for a long time.

Early Detection is Key!

While there's no single perfect test for ovarian cancer, a combination of a pelvic exam and a blood test (CA-125) can be helpful for early detection.
